Meaning of FASTING during Lent

What is canonical teaching of the Catholic Church of Fasting and Abstinence of Meat?

  1. All Christ’s faithful are obliged by divine law to do penance.  On these days Christ’s faithful are in a special manner to devote themselves to prayer, to engage in works of piety and charity, and to deny themselves, by fulfilling their obligations more faithfully and especially by observing the fast and abstinence according to the following canons. (canon 1249)
  2. The days and times of penance for the universal Church are each Friday of the whole year and the season of Lent.  (Can. 1250)
  3. Abstinence from meat, or from some other food as determined by the Bishops’ Conference, is to be observed on all Fridays, unless a solemnity should fall on a Friday.  Abstinence and fasting are to be observed on Ash Wednesday and Godd Friday. (Can. 1251
  4. The law of abstinence binds those who have completed their fourteenth year.  The law of fasting binds those who have attained their majority, until the beginning of their sixtieth year.  Pastors of souls and parents are to ensure that even those who by reason of their age are not bound by the law of fasting and abstinence are taught the true meaning of penance. (Can. 1252)

¿Cuál es la enseñanza canónica de la Iglesia Católica sobre el ayuno y la abstinencia de carne?

  1. Todos los fieles de Cristo están obligados por ley divina a hacer penitencia . En estos días, los fieles deben dedicarse especialmente a la oración, a las obras de piedad y caridad, y a negarse a sí mismos, cumpliendo sus obligaciones con mayor fidelidad y, especialmente, observando el ayuno y la abstinencia según los siguientes cánones (canon 1249).
  2. Los días y tiempos de penitencia para la Iglesia universal son cada viernes del año y el tiempo de Cuaresma. (Can. 1250)
  3. La abstinencia de carne, o de cualquier otro alimento según lo determine la Conferencia Episcopal, debe observarse todos los viernes, a menos que una solemnidad caiga en viernes. La abstinencia y el ayuno deben observarse el Miércoles de Ceniza y el Viernes Santo. (Can. 1251)
  4. La ley de la abstinencia obliga a quienes han cumplido catorce años. La ley del ayuno obliga a quienes han alcanzado la mayoría de edad, hasta el comienzo de los sesenta. Los pastores de almas y los padres deben velar por que incluso a quienes, por su edad, no están sujetos a la ley del ayuno y la abstinencia, se les enseñe el verdadero significado de la penitencia.
